Ovid's poetic work is more than that of any other Latin poet characterized not only by poetic self-reflection, but also by the effort to define his own oeuvre as a unified whole. Through this self-canonization Ovid tries to keep the power of defining his work, which had become particularly precarious after Ovid’s banishment by Augustus. The poetic strategies applied by Ovid will be traced by means of selected examples from the Amores, the Fasti and the Metamorphoses and the exilic poetry
